چکیده

The stabilization of retained austenite was studied via a two-step cooling procedure. Alloys with M , temperatures below 0 OC were used. It was found that the martensitic transformation starting temperature, M,, was lowered to M,' during the second step of cooling. With increasing the amount of previously formed martensite, the difference in the transformation starting temperatures, AM, (= M,M,'), increases. This stabilization effect can also be observed in an alloy having very low carbon content, and the magnetic properties of alloys do not have drastic effect on the nature of this stabilization phenomenon. The mechanism of the stabilization of retained austenite is proposed to be mainly due to the inhibition effect produced by the previously formed martensite. The aging processes are considered to be a necessary condition for the above mechanism to operate.

Thermally activated growth of lath martensite in Fe–Cr–Ni–Al stainless steel

The austenite-to-martensite transformation in a partially hardened stainless steel containing 17wt %Cr, 7wt %Ni and 1wt % Al was investigated with Vibrating Sample Magnetometry and Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction. Magnetometry demonstrated that measurable martensite formation can be suppressed on fast cooling to 77K as well as on subsequent fast heating to 373 K. Surprisingly, martensite form...

Isothermal Martensitic Transformation as an Internal-Stress-Increasing Process

Based on the results that the magnitude of the stabilization of retained austenite increases with increasing the amount of martensite transformed, it has been assumed that the martensitic transformation is accompanied with an increase in internal resisting stress which subsequently results in the stabilization of retained austenite. By simplifying this internal resisting stress to be a type of ...

Deformation behavior of duplex austenite and ε-martensite high-Mn steel

Deformation and work hardening behavior of Fe-17Mn-0.02C steel containing ε-martensite within the austenite matrix have been investigated by means of in situ microstructural observations and x-ray diffraction analysis. During deformation, the steel shows the deformation-induced transformation of austenite → ε-martensite → α'-martensite as well as the direct transformation of austenite → α'-mart...

Microstructures of Pearlite and Martensite Transformed from Ultrafine-Grained Austenite Fabricated through Cyclic Heat Treatment in Medium Carbon Steels

This study investigated the microstructures of pearlite and martensite transformed from ultrafine-grained austenite in 0.45C steel and Vadded 0.45C steel. The mean prior austenite grain sizes were refined to be 4.5 μm in the 0.45C specimen and 2.4 μm in the V-added 0.45C specimen through cyclic heat treatment of austenitizing and water quenching, i.e., repetition of martensite § austenite trans...
